Misia writes her first book – aged 17

Misia, who lives in Belle Vue in Shrewsbury and attends Telford College of Arts and Technology, created Monster in the Jungle as part of her foundation course in art and design.

The book, aimed at youngsters aged between three and eight, tells the story of a creature living in the jungle seeking out new friends on its birthday.

“This is the first book I have ever published,” she said. “The drawing was the most enjoyable aspect, but the whole process is great fun. I only had two months to do it so I had to work non-stop.

“It has inspired me to think about becoming a children’s author in the future.”

A total of 1,000 copies of the book have been printed and are now on sale for £9.99 each. A donation will be made to the Severn Hospice for every copy sold.

Having recently finished her course at TCAT, Misia has turned down the offer of a place on an illustration course at Falmouth University to move to China and study calligraphy, martial arts and meditation.

She said she hopes the new environment will provide her with inspiration for creating different stories.

She has been promoting Monster in the Jungle to primary schools in Shropshire, giving readings to youngsters. Before TCAT, Misia went to Wrekin College in Telford.

Very well done – your family should be rightly proud of you !!!

Another example to other parents that their children don’t have to turn into riot running, drunk, loitering oiks !!! with encouragement and effort they can achieve anything !!!!

I am a proud mother, she does not go out drinking and is not interested in that, but is searching for something deeper… It comes from her.. with obviously some encouragement and example… our children can produce some fantastic work with a bit of support!

It’s an admirable achievement and credit is rightly due to Misia, but the childrens’ book market is incredibily competitive and the £9.99 price point (due, no doubt, to the limited print run of 1,000) might be a problem when hundreds of other high quality books are available for a fraction of the price.

Don’t be disheartened if they don’t sell though; I’m sure the writers of The Gruffalo had to endure a hard slog before they won their success!

Yes I do agree that is a problem, but unfortunately I do need to cover the publishing costs, and once that is done, I will lower the price for the rest.

It should also be noted that I do not wish to compete with other books. In fact, I’m hoping that in the future I will create books that are different from anything I’ve ever read/seen. I do not wish to become famous or sell, but simply to create work that will bring people joy.

Fantastic!! Well done Misia. So happy for you! I’d like to buy a copy. Also looking forward to seeing another one in the future with a character who spreads jam on toast in funny ways ;-D xx
