Planners discuss Oswestry supermarket benefits

An Oswestry businessman claims today is one of the most important in the town’s history with planners due to meet to discuss what benefits it will get from a planned supermarket.

Retailer Yossi Gliksman has made a last-ditch plea to planning officials to oppose a supermarket development planned for the outskirts of the town.

Crunch talks were due to be held in Oswestry today to discuss legal agreements which form part of the planning permission already granted for a supermarket and cinema on part of the Oswestry livestock market in Shrewsbury Road.

Mr Gliksman, from Upstairs Downstairs in Leg Street, said: “This will be one of the most important days in Oswestry.

“If this gets the go-ahead the future of our town centre will be damaged and Oswestry will be committed to the list of town centre casualties to out of town developments.

“This development is not needed.”

A report to the north planning committee, due to be held at the Council Chamber in Castle View, asks councillors to approve the details of the Section 106 legal agreement.

Oswestry Town Council, which owns the land, will gain about £6 million from the deal, which the agreement says must only be spent on town centre initiatives.

    let me have my say

    What a joke the meeting was, here you have a set of coucillours from different parts of shropshire, who were dropped with this decision because of the break up of the other committee, most of them have not been sitting through previous meeting with minutes that where taken, only had half of what was said on them (raised by a councillor), and they had to make a decision yes or no.
    It debatable, but half of the councillours there, I bet did not know what really it was all about.Only what was feed to them when they had a site visit. I felt questions should of been asked to the councillours to get a feeling of their actual understanding of the issues.
    Then you get the vote lead by cllr Joyce Barrow,to vote for the agreement, who in all intense and purpose should really not of been allowed to be involved with any such decissions.then the show of hands as various cllrs watched what the others are doing and following suit, like a mexican wave.
    So now when all is built our 21st vision town councillours will be sitting on more money, with no control of how/where they spend it.
    Least people who work in town, work no more than 5 hrs will be able to park for free, get the shuttle into town for work the shuttle back saving on car park money.
