Pylons petition will be presented to Welsh Assembly
Monday 20th June 2011, 7:02PM BST.
More than 3,200 names opposing plans which could see hundreds of pylons built across the Shropshire and Mid Wales countryside will be presented to the Welsh Assembly tomorrow.
An e-petition, believed to be the largest ever recorded on the National Assembly of Wales website, was set up by John Day of Bwlchyffridd, near Newtown.
It is protesting at the Tan 8 policy which has seen seven sites in Wales identified for new windfarms.
He has amassed 3,249 signatures and is now calling on people to join him at the Senedd in Cardiff tomorrow to present the names to the Welsh Assembly’s petitions committee.
It comes just days after First Minister Carwyn Jones called for the number of windfarm developments across Mid and South Wales to be restricted and said his Government would not support any plans to build pylons to link such farms to the National Grid.
The Shires Independent Group also plans to submit a motion to Powys County Council ahead of its meeting on June 29 calling for the Assembly windfarm policy to be reviewed. National Grid wants to build a substation at Abermule or Cefn Coch and connect it to the National Grid using pylons or underground cables.
Mr Day said: “Tan 8 provides advice and guidelines, which without doubt result in the desecration of our beautiful Mid Wales countryside.”
Meanwhile anti-pylon ca- mpaigners Myfanwy Alexander, of Llanfair Caereinion, and Councillor Graham Brown, Powys county councillor for Llandrinio have welcomed Mr Jones’s announcement on Friday.
Anyone wishing to join Mr Day at the Senedd should call him on (01686) 650495.
