Leak-prone water pipes are upgraded

Saturday 18th June 2011, 11:29AM BST.

Ageing water mains in Shropshire are to be replaced as part of a £1.2 million project to mend leak-prone pipes, utilities chiefs said today.

Severn Trent Water is to begin work to upgrade water mains in Whixall, near Whitchurch, and Little Wenlock, near Wellington, early next month.

The mains being replaced are as much as 50 years old and are made from a material prone to leaks which in extreme cases can disrupt supply, the water firm said.

Public exhibitions on both schemes are to be held next week.

Severn Trent’s contractors Enterprise will carry out the work, which is scheduled to begin in Whixall on July 4 and run until the end of January 2012.

Work is also scheduled to begin in Little Wenlock on the same day and run for about three months.
