Hosepipe ban still looms despite rain

Severn Trent bosses were today still refusing to rule out hosepipe bans being introduced in Shropshire despite the wettest week since February.

Customer services director Martin Kane said the downpours were beginning to make a difference on depleted reservoirs, but he added more rain was needed over a period of days and weeks before things got back to normal.

It comes as the Environment Agency also warned drought was still gripping parts of the country with central and eastern England seeing less than half the average rainfall for June so far.

Mr Kane said: “Of course the rain we’ve been seeing around our region in the last week or so will begin to make a difference, but we can’t afford to be complacent.

“Unless we see a return to seasonal average rainfall we cannot rule out restrictions later in the year.
