Clamp warning to Shropshire illegal parkers
Thursday 16th June 2011, 4:03PM BST.
Shropshire’s band of “hardcore” motorists who park illegally have been warned that they risk having their vehicles clamped and towed away under a new council crackdown.
Councillors have backed the get-tough stance after hearing some drivers carried on parking illegally despite several warnings and parking tickets.
The council’s cabinet meeting at Shirehall yesterday heard of one motorist who had racked up more than £1,000 in parking fines but carried on parking where he shouldn’t.
Councillor Martin Taylor-Smith said: “We have a hardcore of individuals who ignore parking regulations.
“I know of one who makes great show in ripping up enforcement notices and leaving the litter on the road.
“He has more than £1,000 in fines yet he carried on parking on double yellow lines in narrow lanes. They need to be told we won’t tolerate this anymore.”
A report said the new rules would come into play on the “rare occasion when traditional penalty charge notices are an insufficient deterrent to the illegal parking of vehicles”.
It added: “Shropshire Council will not undertake widespread clamping and removal of vehicles.
“However Shropshire Council will take removal action against persistent offending vehicles.
“A vehicle will be released on payment of the appropriate fees.
“For clamping, this will include payment of the original penalty charge notice and the clamp removal fee.”
Councillor Mal Price said: “We need to use this in certain areas where we have persistent offenders. It is not something we will be using every day of every week.”
