Bishop’s Castle dispute GP returns to work
Wednesday 15th June 2011, 1:48PM BST.
A doctor who has been off work for four months due to a dispute with other GPs has returned to work at a south Shropshire surgery, it was revealed today.
Dr Adrian Penney is now working two mornings a week at Bishop’s Castle Medical Practice, but talks are ongoing to see him return to a normal full-time rota.
Dr Penney had earlier declined a potential deal which would have seen him return to work on June 1.
More than 1,000 signatures calling for Dr Penney to be reinstated were handed to Shropshire County Primary Care Trust last month. But the PCT has always insisted the dispute needed to be resolved by GPs at the practice, not by its board.
Cheryl Brierley, practice manager, said: “Dr Penney has returned to work and is doing reduced working hours at the moment. It is short term and will be reviewed again.
“That’s the situation. He’s doing two mornings a week for the foreseeable future.
“I would like to add that discussions are ongoing between the partners.”
Mrs Brierley said that Dr Penney, who had not been formally suspended, had done his first shifts back at the medical practice last week.
The reasons for the disagreement have not been made public.
