British tennis ace Greg Rusedski was today due to officially open the £2.2 million Telford Tennis Centre.

The former British number one and officials from the Lawn Tennis Association were due to unveil a plaque.

The centre, at Oakengates Leisure Centre in Wrockwardine Wood, has been unveiled to coincide with the start of the Wimbledon championships.

Residents were invited to meet Mr Rusedski and possibly serve up a rally with the former world number four.

The centre has four indoor and four outdoor floodlit courts.

Stuart Davidson, Telford & Wrekin Council’s leisure services manager, said: “It promises to be a fantastic day.”

Mr Rusedski is also due to visit High Ercall Tennis Club at 2pm to open more new courts in the borough.
