Shropshire man jailed over indecent assault
Tuesday 14th June 2011, 10:22PM BST.
A former musician from Shropshire convicted of indecently assaulting a young girl 20 years ago was today jailed for four years.
Trevor Povey, 64, of Richard Onslow Court, Hearne Way, Shrewsbury, appeared before Shrewsbury Crown Court today after he was convicted of three charges of indecent assault on a girl under the age of 16.
The offences occurred between January 1991 and December 1991 but the court heard they still had an effect on his victim.
Judge Peter Barrie, said Povey had abused a trust by getting his victim to carry out sexual acts.
He sentenced Povey to four years’ imprisonment but said he felt it was not necessary to impose a sexual offences provision order in view of the fact that there had been no further offences since those of 20 years ago.
He told Povey: “I have to take into account that this happened 20 years ago. Since that time there have been no suggestions that you have been involved in other offences with children or sexual matters at all. I do take that into account to your credit.”
Mr Mark Sharman, for Povey, told the court his client was now 64 and asked the judge to take into account that the offences happened 20 years ago.
