Duke of York to honour Shropshire-based soldiers with awards.
Tuesday 14th June 2011, 9:40AM BST.
Shropshire-based soldiers who were stationed in Afghanistan will be presented with medals honouring their work by HRH the Duke of York as part of a parade this weekend.
Members of the 1st Battalion, The Royal Irish Regiment, based at Tern Hill near Market Drayton, will take part in a medal parade at their base on Saturday.
Herrick medals and Elizabeth Crosses will be presented to soldiers who took part in Operation Herrick 13 in Afghanistan by the regiment’s colonel in-chief Prince Andrew.
Due to its deployment last year, the battalion missed celebrating two regimental days, Barossa and St Patrick’s Day.
As a result, members will hold the parade which will start at 10am to honour their efforts in Afghanistan.
More than 1,000 members of the public and dignitaries are expected to attend the event.
The battalion will receive the Freedom of Market Drayton next year.
