Work starts to strengthen Chirbury Bridge
Monday 13th June 2011, 2:45PM BST.
Work to repair a bridge on the Shropshire/Powys border, which partly collapsed because of extreme cold weather conditions, has started today.
Traffic lights had to be put up on Chirbury Bridge this year after one of the bridge’s spandrel walls was found to have collapsed, leaving the edge of the road unsupported.
The collapse is believed to have occurred as a result of frost heave, where ice forms under the surface, during the extreme cold in December last year.
Work on the bridge, which carries the B4386 Chirbury to Montgomery road, started today and is expected to last for up to six weeks. Shropshire Council said repair work would involve strengthening the bridge.
A spokesman said: “Traffic lights were erected at the bridge in February on an emergency basis when one of the bridge’s spandrel walls was found to have collapsed, leaving the edge of the road unsupported.
“The repair work will also include strengthening the bridge’s north-eastern wing wall.”
He said the road would remain open under traffic light control.
