A busy road in Shrewsbury which collapsed into what is thought to be a historic well has reopened to traffic.

Workers have filled the 12-metre deep hole which appeared on the A5112 on Hazledine Way on June 5 and closed the pavement and eastbound section of the road for all of last week.

The road and the pavement reopened on Saturday afternoon, although it was briefly closed again this morning for minor works to be finished.

The gaping hole has been filled with concrete, and council officials have previously claimed they believe a historic well was to blame for the collapse.

While the road, which is a major route linking Meole Brace in the south of the town to Harlescott in the north, was closed diversions were put in place around Oteley Road to the Emstrey Island and along London Road.

Gary Parton, a highways co-ordination manager for Shropshire Council, said: “The eastbound section of Hazledine Way, Shrewsbury, was re-opened on Saturday.”
