Sir Elton John rocked Shrewsbury’s Greenhous Meadow stadium with two-and-a-half hours of his greatest hits.

The Rocket Man kicked off with Funeral for a Friend and went through some of his best-known songs, including Candle in the Wind, Saturday Night’s All Right (For Fighting), Are You Ready For Love? and Your Song.

The star, who arrived by helicopter just two hours before he was due on stage, thanked his fans for supporting him over the years, and paid tribute to Shrewsbury Town for letting him use their stadium.

Sir Elton told the 16,000-strong crowd that he wished the Shrews well for next season and hoped they would win promotion.

He dedicated yesterday’s concert to Ed Mainwaring, from Meole Brace, who died in May of lymphatic cancer.

Sir Elton said a letter he received “broke my heart” after hearing that Ed, 21, had been hoping to attend the concert.

Before the concert diners at the Red Barn in Longden Road, Shrewsbury had to do a double-take after the singing legend popped in with his entourage for a drink.

One diner, said: “We knew he was playing a show in town but never expected to see him in the pub.”

By Claire Dunn and Russell Roberts

Even the rain held off as Sir Elton – dressed in an electric blue shirt and tails covered in jewels – belted out the hits for more than two hours before his thousands of waterproof-clad fans.

Concert-goers said the star’s visit was fantastic for the town and hoped it would pave the way for more big name acts to perform at the Oteley Road stadium.

Cheryl Walton, of Shrewsbury, said: “It was brilliant, really good. I won tickets to come and see the concert on the Severn Radio. I used to be in his fan club when I was eight but I wasn’t sure what to expect this time. He’s such a showman and he was brilliant.

“We need to get Take That next time.”

Anne Stewart, Leigh Stewart and Maureen Turner, all from Shrewsbury, who have attended a number of big concerts across the country, said they believed last night’s gig was one of the best they had ever seen.

Leigh said: “It was brilliant and we need to get him back. He had amazing energy, he came on at 7pm and it was non-stop right through to 9.30pm which is incredible.

“He seemed to really enjoy it and gave off a really good vibe, it was a really good long concert. My favourite song was Tiny Dancer.”

Anne said: “Even when his band went off he was still fantastic. I think it was a really well organised concert.”

Maureen said they were also touched at Elton’s dedication of the concert to the late 21-year-old Ed Mainwaring whose family and girlfriend were in the audience.

She said: “It was lovely when he did that and it will have meant a lot to his family.

“It is definitely one of the best concerts I have attended and we go to lots of concerts. It’s so nice to come here to this stadium and hear big names.

“We are hoping there will be more to come in the future as this one was really successful.”

Tony and Beverley Cheadle and Will and Lesley Strachan, all from Shrewsbury, attended the concert together and said it had been a great experience.

Beverley said: “It was two-and-a-half hours of non-stop music. It was superb with his classic songs and some of his new stuff as well.”

Dancing

Tony said: “It’s Status Quo next and we’re getting some really good names in Shrewsbury.”

The group said there was an excellent atmosphere at the concert with people singing and dancing in the stands and on the pitch.

Jean Fewtrell, of Wem, was attending the concert with her daughters Suzanne Ward and Samantha Helliwell.

She said: “It was fantastic and we really wanted to see him. It was a good venue and it was really organised, it was wonderful to have something like this in Shrewsbury.”

Judith Reynolds, of Newtown, said she had travelled to the concert with a number of friends and family members.

She said: “It was fantastic and he played lots of his best known songs. There was a really good atmosphere and we all had a great time.”

Bob and Amanda Ward, from Wolverhampton, said it had been great fun.

“We thought the football ground would be a good place for a concert and it definitely was.

“Elton was fantastic and really put on a good show. He played his classics like Rocket Man and Crocodile Rock but the songs from his new album were excellent as well.

“If they have a concert like this again we would definitely come.”

Samantha Roberts, of Cross Houses, near Shrewsbury, who was there with husband Sean, said: “It was a great evening. Elton was a real showman and there was a good mix of old and new songs. I thought the venue was perfect and even the weather held.”

Sharon Howells, of Telford, and her 17-year-old son Adam said they were thrilled that Elton John was playing in Shrewsbury.

“It is great that Elton is playing here and that we did not have to travel too far to see him.”

Avril Armitage-Smith and her sisters Gill Mcgready and Anne Woodman, from Stafford, Wolverhampton and Yorkshire, were fresh from seeing Take That in concert in Manchester.

They shrugged off the threat of rain and said they were thrilled .

While Nicola Twyford, from Bayston Hill, near Shrewsbury, said: “I think this is brilliant for Shrewsbury. “

Kevin and Anne Adams, of Shrewsbury, said they had been looking forward to the event for months.

Hero

Anne said: “Elton John is my hero. I have been to see him in concert three times and it is great that he is here in Shrewsbury.”

Lynne Lloyd, of Melverley, near Oswestry, said her ticket had been a Christmas present.

“It is absolutely wonderful that Elton is here in Shrewsbury.”

Vanessa Bates and her friend Lecky Phillips, both of Telford, said they were huge fans and were delighted that Elton performed in Shrewsbury.

Also at the concert was Shrewsbury Town Football Club mascot Ron Millar and his wife Caroline, of Sutton Farm, Shrewsbury, said: “It is absolutely brilliant that Elton John has come here, and in particular the football stadium. It really puts us on the map.”

Melissa Clews, of Copthorne, Shrewsbury, said it was the first time that she had seen Elton perform. “It is really great that he was here on my doorstep.”

Margaret Timmins, of Maesbury, was attending the concert with her daughters Natalie, of Wrexham and Michelle, of West Felton.

“We are all big Elton John fans. We have waited a long time to come and see him as we got our tickets in October last year.”

And Sally Johnson, of Worthen, near Shrewsbury, said: “What a great night.”

    Mm

What a great night, he was amazing. The highlight was watching him take off in his helicopter afterwards.

    • Michelle

What a bizarre comment about the helicopter taking off being the highlight of the night!?!
What about the 2hours+ of hearing one of the greatest living singer/songwriters perform live?
Great day, great show, seemed well organised apart from a number of people sitting around us who had managed somehow to be given duplicated tickets so arrived at their seat to find someone else on it!
It’s a shame some people can’t manage to stay in their seats for more than 10mins, we were sat near an exit & it was very distracting with people getting up and down & wandering about, some several times during the show; we personally went to watch the show, not stand in a queue for burgers & beer!
Hopefully this will be the first of many concerts at the football ground.

      • Mm

Im sorry but it was a very special moment. I went with my teenage son and seeing Elton John come out on to the grass, wave at everyone then take off was pretty cool. But I’m sorry you find my comment bizarre, I’ll just think of something negative to say about the night, like you have.

        • Michelle

I can understand it would be very ‘cool’, but to describe it as the highlight of the whole event must be a bit of an overstatement?
As for my ‘negative comments’ they were merely observations of the event. I am a fan of Elton’s music so came to see the show, I paid too much for a ticket to miss half of it queuing for food or drinks – But each to their own!
Elton put on a great show (as ever) and for Shrewsbury’s first large concert they did a fine job.

Just wanted to say how well organised the event was- there’d been so much negative comment about what a nightmare the parking and traffic was going to be and it turned out to be really trouble free and much easier than so many similar events. Its important we support the club and the council who worked together to make this event a real success and encourage more artists to come to Shrewsbury. Well done!

Completely agree Tom. It was a fantastic night, really well organised considering how many people there were. The only thing that put a slight dampener on it were the ‘overenthusiastic stewards’ who didn’t want anyone to stand up & dance. I can understand the view that it may spoil people’s view but it’s a live music event with big screens so why the ‘fun police’ approach?

    • Lawrie

Completely agree, the overzelous ‘security’ personnel should have realised that this was a concert given by a rock legend, not the Birmingam Symphony Orchestra.

Sitting, applauding politely, is not a prerequisite for this type of event. Glad to say that they didn’t spoil the brilliant night that we all had.

      • Chris

We were only 20 rows from the front the stewards told some people to sit down early on, but well before it was half over they let people stand without a problem. Not everyone wants to stand throughout the whole two and a half hours, but absolutely fair enough that many do once the concert is well underway. I’d say the stewards got it about right.

      Andy,

Why the negativity? Elton would not have been my number one choice either but lets just encourage the council and the football club to put more of these on. Hopefully there will be something for everyone.

Last night was a resounding success. Fantastic show form a world class performer and 16,000 people going home very happy. Well done to all concerned.

Note to the Chronicle – Your scaremongering and negativity surrounding the likely “traffic chaos” was completely unfounded. In Thursdays paper you had an opportunity to champion the fact that our town was hosting a genuine world superstar for the first time. Shame on you for ignoring the fact and highlighting the possible downside. I look forward to how you put a negative spin on last nights events this week!!!

Well 16,000 people enjoyed it so how much more relevant do you want?

If your talking about younger bands then Elton would have paved the way by proving the Meadow is a viable and successful arena for music acts in the future. He has set the standard.

This was Elton doing what Elton does best, entertaining.
There can be few people in the World who don’t know Elton John.

I would “get out a bit more” if I felt it was worth spending my hard earned cash on – I’d prefer to go and see someone producing something new – not regurgitating old hits – o and before you ask I’m in my mid 50s and saw Elton about 30 years ago – bored me rigid then

Generally speaking, most people don’t go to gigs by established starts to hear just new stuff. Madonna did it a few years ago and was booed. Most do a mixture as did Elton John last Sunday. But as one writer said, if Shrewbury can successfully host someone as big as EJ here, it paves the way for other less established stars. And as for you ideal for this; where are they?

If they staged a concert of someone a little more ‘relevant’, I doubt very much they would fill a 16,000 seat arena.

Brilliant show, well organised, Sir Elton (Im not a fan) made me understand why he has been at the top for so long. The organisation was excellent, parking easy, crowd control seemed effortless, stewarts were so on the ball, and at the risk of being critisized, I agreed with them when they insisted on everyone remaining seated in the early part of the show, I for one did not wish pay £75 to watch some ones larger than life rear end pendulousy swinging about, leaving me trying to see the band as the stage occasionally came into veiw.
Lastly it would be interesting to know how the tickets were allocated, I booked as soon as they went on sale, within mins, however I noted better seats in the same section were still available the day before the event, keeping the best till last maybe.
Thanks for a great night organisers

Went to the concert last night which was superb, there were things that need looking at with hosting such an event but we went to take That on friday in manchester and took us 1 1/2 hrs to get out of the city and they are used to concerts! Need experienced parking stewards as most really didn’t have a clue.

The music was wonderful and credit must go to the club, council but mostly to the people who braved the weather (which thankfully eased) that made a fantastic night for all.

I had been at work for 7 hrs,too busy for even get a break, grrrr, so was feeling pretty tired and a bit down, what with the teeming rain, late yesterday afternoon.
We had booked expensive seats ages ago, right near the front and were consequently open to the elements, unlike those in the cheaper seats on the terraces, so it was a massive stoke of luck the rain stopped.

Elton was the super star that he is famed to be. A genius music writer and player and a born entertainer.
I can understand the comments about him departing in the helicopter because it felt like something incredibly special had happened. Everyone seemed enthralled with the performance and his vanishing into the sky as we were leaving seemed somehow rather apt!

His new album is as brilliant as all the old favourites. I just wished Leon Russell with his lovely, gravelly voice wasn’t too old to do these events and how fantastic of Elton to find and work with a person he considered his music hero when he started out.
Thanks Elton for your energy and amazing ability to still perform and sing so brilliantly.

Parking… as others have said try getting out of the MEN or NEC??

For the man to play for 2.5 hours plus was amazing in itself and just looking around at the warmth and enjoyment evident around the whole audience speaks for itself I would say….

Fantastic night, what a brilliant concert to have in Shrewsbury, and 16,000 people from near and far came to the town and had a brilliant time. Well done STFC. And lots of jobs for local people too.

Would only have been better if the ridiculous scare stories from certain counsellors meant that people did not have to pay silly amounts extra to park in designated areas – if we had not been ‘banned’ from parking elsewhere, we would have arrived mid-afternoon and spent money in local cafes and pubs, but as it was we couldn’t park in the car park until 4pm so headed straight there and didn’t spend any money elsewhere!

On the night, all was fine, with hundreds of empty streets around Shrewsbury – streets that are designed for cars to be on them!
We bought a park and walk ticket for Louise House, only to arrive there and be told that they had double booked the car park! So re-directed into Pritchards by the BP garage. Car Park stewards were very courteous but some people did end up getting blocked in as there was not enough room for everyone.

My partner & I travelled from East Lancashire to watch the gig and I have to say that I thought it was a fantastic venue & very well organised. Well done Shrewsbury! Elton was amazing the sound was awesome & the guy is quite frankly a genius. Moving dedication to Ed my thoughts are with his family. Lovely to meet so many lovely die hard elton fans & especially the ladies in loo queue at the Brooklands. The stewards who attempted to get those of us in A3 to sit down didn’t stand a chance I found it quite amusing actually. even tho I stood out like a sore thumb I was defo dancing to I guess that’s why the call it the blues (not typically one to dance to but a fave of mine) & I was made up when elton pointed at me part way thru it lol! The highs of crocodile rock (i got on the big screen as well during that one – i was rocking it), followed by the moving candle in the wind that had me stood still just watching him & listening, and the grand finale your song was a perfect ending to an incredible performance. Ahhh however like others I too was very excited & positively buzzing to see him fly over the ground in the “proper chopper” it was an amazing sight, i was still inside the ground at the time. I have the best memories from the whole experience and I’m getting goose bumps now from writing this. Thanks Shrewsbury …. Let me start by saying what a fantastic concert by one of the worlds leading showmen (and this was supposed to be only a warm up for his world tour). A big thank you to all the Shrews my wife and I met during the afternoon. I was a little concerned on the way to the event that parking would be a real problem (having read the councils warnings on the net)having not previously booked a parking space, I need not have worried parking at a nearby local pub was spot on (sorry can’t remember the pub name). 1 negative note, other than the overpriced food on sale at the stadium, was disappointed that a meal was not available at any of the local pubs near the event, (the one we parked at stopped serving Sunday lunch early) and the chip shop across the road wasn’t even open, with hundreds milling around it, lost opportunity for easy money there. However a small price to pay for a great evening, thank you Shrewsbury. Mervyn and Bev from Lower Gornal, Dudley.

Great concert, really well organised inside the stadium. Having travelled from Doncaster in the pouring rain and arriving at the hotel a little frazzled, we decided to head straight for the parking areas, no issues parking at all, the stewards told us where to go and we could not have been closer to the snicket at the side of Focus DIY, straight out onto Oteley road. When Ed came on, we realised the rain had stopped and took our seats (right next to a couple of STFC season ticket holders who engaged us in conversation and made a pair of out of towners feel really welcome.)While Elton cant do every song in his arsenal, I was disappointed that he did not finish the encore with Pinball wizard as he did at Doncaster because it engages everyone and leaves you buzzing. But you cant please everyone. Thanks to all at STFC for a great day.

Elton John is not my really cup of tea but I’m glad that so many people had a good time and the whole event went so well.
It looks like Councillor Jon Tandy’s scare stories came to nothing!

It amazes me how people use places like this to have a general irrelevant bitch at eachother.

The concert was fantastic as was the man himself. Those who do not like him or his music do not have to moan at others who do…everyone is entitled to their own tase…get a grip!

My mum bought her and myself a ticket each last year as she was a lifelong fan of his and preforming in Shrewsbury was the perfect chance for her to finally get to see him. Sadly she was killed recently and so never got to see him. So to those who continue to moan…..there really are better things you could be doing with your life!

So, I’m going to have to guess…You hate Elton for beating you to hand of David Furnish.

Don’t you think people are strange?
The way they see things in different ways
some people have never heard of him
Some think back to the “good old days”

People get thrills out of different things
“The helicopter moment was the highlight”
    Some people observe and critisize
But you all paid to go out for the night?

    Lawries comment was great :0)
Sense of humour to make people smile
If I had known there was a glittery suit
And a chopper I would have turned out in style!

Fair play to this legend Sir Elton
Entertaining the crowd still his aim
I admire his desire to keep burning the fire
May his legend live on in thy name

You have all got me wrong, On holiday in San Francisco. there were loads of beautiful girls walking together holding hands, we were told by our guide in a whispering voice that they were all lesbians. I turned to my wife of Nealy 50 years, and said that when I die and go to heaven and the good lord says what do you want to go back as, I will say a lesbian please.

I do find it highly amusing (and utterly rediculous) that some people think being gay is fine as long as you have breasts.

Well I clearly had got you wrong.
Let me add, as someone who has done Equality & Diversity training I acknowledge the rights of trans-gendered individuals to pursue their desire for the world to see them as they feel themselves to be and thus I whole-heartedly support your decision.

Glad Elton performed well, I’d be more interested if there were some more stadium/arena acts lined up. Shrewsbury’s always lacked a decent venue for heavier bands to play at with the result being a trip to Wolves and a last minute dash to catch the train home. I think the best band to have played in town was Electric 6 and that was a good few years ago now.
Hopefully there’ll be some real crowd pleasers (not just from the cosy world of pop) making an appearance in the future as there’s the whole of mid wales to draw fans from to fill the venue.

If I was a Red Barn regular i’d probably try and make my life more interesting by starting a rumour. Anyway, we’ll never know if he dropped in or not until almost everyone in society is going round with a mobile phone with a camera in it in their pocket ready for when something unusual occurs….ah
