Cancer mum says get coughs checked
Saturday 11th June 2011, 11:30AM BST.
A Shropshire mother-of-three who was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer today urged people to get a check-up if they are constantly coughing.
Suzette Slocombe was enjoying a holiday with her family last year when she suddenly began to feel ill and contacted her GP.
But within weeks the 64-year-old was told she would need more tests and was eventually told she had lung cancer.
Despite doctors’ best efforts, she said she was now faced with the terminal condition and urged people who suffer from a cough lasting longer than three weeks to call their GP immediately.
Mrs Slocombe is a retired retail assistant who has lived in Telford for 25 years.
She is married to Michael, and they have three children, Simon aged 37, Amanda aged 41 and Nicola aged 42. She also has three grandchildren.
“I’ve got an aggressive small cell lung cancer and I know the score,” she said.
“I have no illusions about my prognosis. But the way I look at it is this. I was told that without treatment I would have three months to live. I did have treatment and here I am 18 months later, still pretty fit and enjoying my life immensely.”
