Council says Oswestry will benefit from supermarket

Bosses at Oswestry Town Council today promised residents will benefit from the planning deal which allowed a new supermarket to be built.

The vow came as it was announced a crunch meeting will be held on June 21 to iron out what economic benefits the town will enjoy from the supermarket deal.

Under what is known as a Section 106 agreement, Oswestry was promised economic benefits after Shropshire Council controversially gave planning permission for a new store to be built on the Smithfield livestock site.

What is in the 106 agreement has raised concerns with campaign group Oswestry 21.

But the town council, which owns the Smithfield site, today insisted Oswestry as a whole will benefit.

Mayor Cynthia Hawksley said: “I am disappointed to hear of this continuing confusion particularly after I took time this week to meet with officers at Oswestry 21 to explain our position face-to-face.

“We again reiterate that the project surplus will be ringfenced for town-based projects that are determined through extensive local community consultation.”

    let me have my say

    Here we go again, I wonder if the council have booked a larger room for objectors alike to be present when the coucillours more than likely sell the town of oswestry short, plus I bet the original figure of £5-6 million, will be quite alot less.

    Utter nonsense, the section 106 will be nothing more than a fence or concrete modern art. Again Shropshire Councillors are betraying their voters and slavishly nodding to demands of officers.

    The only thing to benefit from this will be the council in the money it will generate from such a deal with the planners and the supermarket, the local high street shops may as well shut there doors now, before the tumble weeds enter there premises.
    Oswestry is no longer a market town, and in reality should loose its status as one.
