Bridgnorth supermarkets approved
Friday 10th June 2011, 5:11PM BST.
Plans to build two new supermarkets less than half a mile apart in Bridgnorth have been approved despite objections from residents.
Permission was granted for discount chain Aldi to build a food store on the former Bridgnorth College site in Stourbridge Road.
And a supermarket will also be built at Chartwell Business Park nearby after members of Shropshire Council’s south planning committee approved both applications at a meeting yesterday.
Bridgnorth Civic Society had objected to both applications, with members fearing the stores would damage trade in the town centre and hit businesses.
But councillors unanimously backed both applications after hearing claims the stores would encourage more people to shop in the Bridgnorth area rather than outside the county.
Stewart Hickman, managing agent for Chartwell Developments Ltd, said after the decision: “I am absolutely delighted that planning permission for a food retail outlet on Chartwell Park has been granted.
“This is great news for Bridgnorth as a whole, as a food retail outlet it will act as an anchor store that will serve to attract other businesses to Chartwell and this will bring about increased employment opportunities,” he continued.
“Given that the town has recently seen job losses, development on Chartwell will provide a massive boost that is desperately needed.”
The name of the supermarket which would be built on that site has not yet been revealed.
Councillor Madge Shineton said the former college site was an ideal location for Aldi, adding: “I think it will benefit a far wider area than just Bridgnorth.”
