Shropshire Council’s pylons stance welcomed
Thursday 9th June 2011, 4:18PM BST.
Environmental campaigners in Oswestry have welcomed Shropshire Council’s objections to National Grid plans which could see pylons go up across the county.
The Oswestry branch of the Campaign to Protect Rural England said today the council had added its voice to the “roar of rage” against the plans.
Council chiefs have said they will tell National Grid that pylons to connect windfarms in Mid Wales to the national electricity network should not pass through Shropshire and if it insists in running the cables through the county, they must go underground.
It comes as campaigners in Powys are being encouraged to hold fundraising events to support the work of Montgomeryshire Against Pylons.
National Grid is proposing to build a substation to collect the energy from the windfarms and a 400,000 volt transmission connection.
Shropshire Council is due to agree on Wednesday that it will formally object to the plans because of the detrimental effect they will have on the county.
Mike Bullen, chairman of the Oswestry branch of the CPRE, said: “I am delighted Shropshire Council are supporting the huge numbers of people who are objecting to this.
“There is a roar of rage from many people in this area about this plan.”

It will be interesting to see if the Council will have a consistant approach to pylons when the decision to develop the land next to Lion Coppice is made. Looking at the development as outlined, the highest density of housing is right next to national grid pylons crossing the development land.
