Free swimming in Telford for under-16s

Youngsters under the age of 16 will soon be able to swim for free in Telford again, council chiefs said today. Telford and Wrekin Council pulled the plug on free swimming for all but pensioners and toddlers last September.

This was due to the drying up of Government funding but the authority’s cabinet today said bringing back the perk for school-age teenagers and youngsters was high on the agenda for its emergency budget.

All young people resident in the borough and those with a Flex card can take advantage of the chance to swim free, with a number of sessions available each week in council-owned pools.

People over the age of 60 will continue to enjoy free swimming, provided they have the leisure card.

Telford & Wrekin Council has signed up to be part of the National Big Splash campaign aimed at encouraging everyone to swim.

Councillor Arnold England, cabinet member for leisure and well-being, said: “The previous administration decided to stop free swimming but we intend to do things in a different way and it doesn’t have to be purely about cuts.

“We plan to re-introduce free swimming as part of our commitment to produce an emergency budget within the first 100 days of the new administration.

“Active children and young people tend to be healthier and happier and I am delighted that we will be able to bring this in.”

Details of the free swim offer will shortly be made available at http://www .telford.gov.uk/swimming

New pool timetables will be available from leisure centres from July.

Of course, Labour will not be increasing the rates, will they?

After all, they know wages for many haven’t risen in four or five years, that people will also get massive rises in gas and electricity bills this year.
