Use of floor space crucial to Shrewsbury Tesco decision
Wednesday 8th June 2011, 11:57AM BST.
A decision on how floor space is divided between food and non-food items will be crucial in determining Tesco’s latest bid to expand its Shrewsbury store, it was claimed today.
Bosses of the chain want to increase the size of the Extra store in Battlefield Road by a third – just months after winning approval to increase non-grocery space after flouting planning rules.
The store currently has a ratio of 60 per cent food to 40 per cent non-food.
At a meeting of Shrewsbury Town Council’s planning committee, Councillor Mal Price, who represents Battlefield, said the plans would be in “difficult water” if those percentages were not maintained.
Council members fear a large increase in the amount of non-food goods supplied at the store could greatly affect trade in the town.
Tesco representatives spoke at yesterday’s meeting and said they would be doing all they could to consult with the community after “issues in the past”.
But Councillor Price said: “There are concerns about the size of the store and impact on Shrewsbury town centre with the sale of non-food goods. It also lies on one of the biggest road junctions in Shropshire. Better transport measures should be brought in regardless of whether the plans are passed. The floor space split is crucial and if the current percentage is not retained these plans will be in difficult water.”
An exhibition of the new proposals will be on display in the store on June 17 and 18. Plans are expected to be submitted in July.
