Supermarkets could join Oswestry pubwatch scheme.
Wednesday 8th June 2011, 5:57PM BST.
Supermarkets could be joining a pubwatch scheme, which bans offenders, after seeing its success in cutting night-time violence in Oswestry.
Officials behind the scheme in Oswestry are looking at expanding its membership to allow the stores, as well as restaurants, to become involved.
It would mean anyone banned from pubs would also be stopped from entering theses premises too.
Frank Francis, chairman, said he felt it made sense to include shops which sold alcohol as well.
He said: “There have been about two or three supermarkets that have expressed an interest in pubwatch.
“Restaurants can suffer from the same problems as pubs. Pubwatch aims to protect people going to the premises and the staff there.
“Pubwatch has been going for four or five years and people are aware if they do something wrong they are banned from socialising altogether.
“According to the police the violence at night has dropped and I think it is down to the pubs standing together and people knowing they are banned.
“People are now starting to behave better.”
Melissa James, store personnel manager at Morrisons in Station Road, said: “We would be interested in joining pubwatch. I do think it is a good idea.”
Shropshire Councillor Bill Benyon said: “It is a good idea to include supermarkets and restaurants. Anybody who sales alcohol should be involved.
“Pubwatch seems to have got off the ground. It is a deterrent to people who misbehave. It is a good thing for the town.”
There are currently 26 members in the pubwatch and a meeting is held once a month.
The next meeting is on July 5.
