‘Good progress’ made repairing Shrewsbury road collapse
Wednesday 8th June 2011, 3:48PM BST.
Part of a busy Shrewsbury road remained closed today, but transport chiefs said they were making good progress repairing a pavement which collapsed, leaving a gaping hole.
Officials from Shropshire Council said the hole had been filled with stone and were planning to cap it with concrete before building up the road surface on Hazeldine Way.
They said yesterday that they believed a historic well could be to blame for causing the pavement to collapse on Saturday night.
Tim Sneddon, head of environmental maintenance at the council, said engineers were continuing to work as hard as possible to ensure the road could reopen in time for Sunday’s big Sir Elton John concert in the town.
He said: “We are going to be putting in an inspection chamber so we can see what is happening underneath the concrete to monitor it so that we don’t have any problems in the future.”
Mr Sneddon said they expected to have completed the work by Saturday evening but stressed that if it was necessary a section of Hazeldine Way could remain shut on Sunday during Elton’s concert at the nearby Greenhous Meadow Stadium. It will be attended by about 16,000 people.
