Tesco officials can expect grilling at Shrewsbury meeting
Tuesday 7th June 2011, 9:49AM BST.
Tesco officials are expected to face a grilling over the company’s controversial plans to expand the size of its Shrewsbury store at a public meeting tonight.
The supermarket giant is proposing to increase the size of its Extra store in Battlefield by a third – just months after winning approval to utilise more space for the sale of non-grocery goods, despite flouting planning rules for three years.
Tesco had been in breach of regulations on the amount of non-food items it was selling at the Battlefield store, but it was granted planning permission in October to officially increase the amount of space it uses to sell these products.
News of its latest expansion plans – which the store says will create jobs – have met with an angry reaction from town centre traders.
Two representatives of the supermarket are to attend a meeting of Shrewsbury Town Council at the Guildhall at 6pm tonight. The event is open to members of the public.
Councillor Mal Price, Shropshire Council member for Battlefield told a meeting of the council’s finance and general purposes committee he did not have a problem with out-of-town supermarkets, as long as they were mainly limited to selling groceries.

Well it’s about time – don’t know why they didn’t make it a two storey affair when it was built. Would have saved a lot of trouble now. Why should Telford get all the big stores and Shrewsbury trail along behind. That’s the trouble with the small minded people in this town, they have small minds!!
Good Luck to them I say.
