Concern over Bridgnorth Aldi store plans
Tuesday 7th June 2011, 7:39PM BST.
Aldi’s bid to build a new supermarket in Bridgnorth, bringing 13 jobs to the town, has been recommended for approval.
But Bridgnorth Civic Society chairman Mike Rainsford today hit out at Shropshire Council planners for backing the Stourbridge Road development, which he said “will kill trade” in the town.
Mr Rainsford, whose group had submitted a 20-page objection letter to the low-cost food store, said: “There is no imagination or long-term thinking in these plans and I can see no logic whatsoever in what they’re doing. I don’t feel we have been listened to and it’s a great pity.”
Mr Rainsford said he had little hope that Shropshire Council’s south planning committee would overrule its officers when it meets at 2pm on Thursday to make a final decision.
He added: “But I can tell them now that they will live to regret it.”
However, case officer Richard Fortune said in his report to councillors the proposed store was in demand in Bridgnorth.

I’m in total agreement with Richard Fortune, Bridgnorth is screaming for a decent discount supermarket. Bridgnorth is killing itself with an overdose of shops which we simply do not need. Opticians, Estate agents, overpriced shoe shops and several empty shops – need I say more? I have been a resident of Bridgnorth for most of my life and for the last ten years my wife and I have done our main shopping out of town, and yes we use Aldi, usually the Wellington, Telford branch and we can’t recommend it highly enough. If the shops in Bridgnorth offered consumers the products they wanted at reasonable prices, they’d have little to worry about. Next we need a McDonalds please, followed swiftly by a B&M, a Sports Direct, maybe an Argos and a PC world, and then guess what? Bridgnorth people may have no need to shop in the Wrekin District to find the things they need. A new Aldi may be just be the kick up the bum that some traders need.

I think Mr. Rainsford has a tendancy to exaggerate. During this time of austerity a shop like Aldi will be a welcome addition.

Great news, I live in Bridgnorth and have done all my life and do not drive so getting somewhere cheaper to shop is great.
