Letter: His Bobness – genius is as genius does

Tuesday 7th June 2011, 6:11AM BST.

Letter: In response to Mr Sidney Evans: “Genius is too big a label for Bob Dylan”, May 30. After reading this disgraceful letter I am left shocked and appalled, I would like to make it clear that Dylan was and still is a genius.

He is not just a singer-songwriter, but a poet and painter. I find it hard to believe that Mr Evans must think to receive Golden Globes, Grammy and Academy awards you have to do nothing.

I find it very ignorant and brainless to criticise Dylan.

Mr Evans, I must inform you that “The times they are a-changin’” and there will be new geniuses after Shakespeare, Vermeer and the many others you have named and claimed to be a “genius” and Bob Dylan is one of them.

You do not have to be the most intelligent human being to gain this title. Einstein was dyslexic. You have to have ambition, talent and desire to make a change, which I can safely say Dylan has and definitely done.

Bob’s work is truly inspirational, second only to Vogon poetry.

I like Dylan a lot. Not a devotee by any means but I have ten of his albums and listen to his music at least as much as I listen to anyone else’s.

Yet isn’t this debate somewhat pointless? Some people enjoy his music, some think he’s a genius, others don’t get what the fuss is about. It’s a matter of personal taste, nothing else.

And you’re never going to persuade anyone with sentences like this :

‘I find it very ignorant and brainless to criticise Dylan.’

an album is something that sold for anywhere from $2.99- $4,99 during the early 60s they were a constant that stayed the same for 80 years or longer. the only change in record albums was somewhere in the 60s they changed to stereo from monoural? which improved the sound greatly. they were unlike today’s options where you can purchase a new mode of playing your music but also change the disc you play. which seems to change every couple of months. today you can listen to your favorite music just about anywhere you want if you purchase the correct player. while albums and record players you basically had to stay home to listen. so if you were outside with no car radio or transistor radio you pretty much had to do something constructive with your time which is why america continued to lead the world in economy, trade and exports.

Mickey, you have too much time on your hands and are obviously oblivious to humour.

And, what in the name of all that is holy, is that comment about America supposed to mean? I think you’ll find they had albums in America too.

Either a) something you need an attention span a bit longer than a goldfish’s to listen to and enjoy or b) something you keep hold of because you’re a dinosaur who can’t or won’t learn to use an ipod.

Exactly. I like Bob Dylan a lot – but not to the point of insulting people who don’t.

I was going to say ‘lighten up Fred or whoever’ but I see it’s another of those stupid ‘name and address supplied’ letters.

I do think the Star should totally ignore them unless someone has a really strong case for hiding their identity. Not just being an over-excited Dylan fan.

Why is it that if a singer-guitar player adds a harmonica he’s considered a genius, but if he goes that extra mile and straps a pair of cymbals to his knees …
