Boundary changes don’t affect Shropshire MPs
Tuesday 7th June 2011, 11:59PM BST.
Shropshire could retain all five of its MPs in the biggest review of constituency boundaries in electoral history, it has been suggested.
Shropshire’s political map will be transformed under the coalition’s plans to equalise the size of parliamentary seats and cut the number of MPs in the House of Commons from 650 to 600. According to academics at the University of Liverpool, the county would not lose a single MP.
But the boundaries of three of its present constituencies might change.
Labour’s David Wright’s Telford Labour seat could include parts of The Wrekin, currently held by Mark Pritchard.
The Conservative MP’s constituency boundary may be extended to include a section of the Ludlow seat where Tory Philip Dunne is MP.
His constituency could be renamed Ludlow and Leominster to include parts of north Herefordshire.
Mr Dunne could face a battle to retain his constituency with the carving up of other neighbouring Herefordshire seats.
The constituency boundaries of Shrewsbury & Atcham, currently served by Tory Daniel Kawczynski, and North Shropshire, held by fellow Conservative MP and Northern Ireland Secretary Owen Paterson, would remain unchanged.
Constituencies across the whole of Britain are to be reviewed and changed to have roughly the same number of voters, about 75,000.
The Boundary Commission in England has been charged with mapping the new constituencies.
Mr Dunne said: “This is the third attempt to pre-judge the Boundary Commission’s work.
“Each one has had a slightly different take on what might or what might not happen in Shropshire. I will be waiting to see what the Boundary Commission comes up with instead of speculating,” he added.
The majority of constituencies are likely to be affected with England losing 31 MPs (from 533 to 502), Wales 10 (40 to 30), Scotland seven (59 to 52) and Northern Ireland two (18 to 16).
The review comes after the Parliamentary Voting System and Constituencies Act was passed earlier this year.
No constituency will cross national borders and the Boundary Commission for England has said it will aim to ensure that none will cross regional boundaries too.
