Race against time to fix road for Shrewsbury Elton show

Transport chiefs face a race against time to avoid traffic chaos for Sir Elton John’s big concert in the county, after a pavement collapse created roadworks.

Shropshire Council had planned to close Oteley Road outside Shrewsbury Town FC’s Greenhous Meadow stadium for Sunday’s concert, which will be attended by about 16,000 people.

But bosses may now be forced to revise that plan, with part of Hazeldine Way currently shut while officials are trying to repair a gaping hole.

Tim Sneddon, Shropshire Council’s head of environmental maintenance, said engineers were working as fast as they could to reopen the road in time.

He said: “Our target is to get it open for Sunday for the Elton John concert.

“If Hazeldine Way is shut on the day it would really compromise the flow of traffic.”

It came as the council today said that a historic well could be to blame for causing the pavement to collapse on Saturday night.

Who will be first to say something like “Workmen are looking into it”? :-)

It will be more than a week since the hole appeared. How on earth did we rebuild Britain after bombing in the war if it takes so long to repair one hole!?
