Shropshire joins in Big Lunch fun
Monday 6th June 2011, 1:02PM BST.
Neighbours in parts of Shropshire sat down to enjoy a meal together as part of a national bid to boost community spirit. Street parties took place in Bayston Hill, near Shrewsbury, Meole Village in the town, and in Ludlow yesterday.
It was all part of the Big Lunch initiative.
Louise Chaplin, one of the co-organisers of the Meole Village event, said the celebration had been a great success with about 100 people attending.
“It was a real community day, bringing everybody together,” she said.
“There were people who were born on this street who came along. Most people said they had made a new friend. It has helped to bring the community together a bit.”
She said she had originally been worried there would not be enough food to go around, but in the end there was lots.
“We will definitely be doing it all again next year.
“At the end, everybody made a wish and a lot wished we could do this again,” she said.
The day’s activities got under way in Victoria Road at noon, and went on until 5pm.
The group sat down together to eat at 1pm, tucking into the variety of dishes that had been brought along by people in the neighbourhood.
As well as enjoying plenty of food and drink, party-goers enjoyed live music from local bands, a children’s fashion show and a number of competitions, such as an egg and spoon race and a dads’ race.
