Disappointment after Shrewsbury fun day postponed due to weather

Organisers of the Shrewsbury Lions Fun Day have spoken of their “disappointment” after the event was cancelled for the first time in its 40-year history.

The event, which was expected to attract about 3,000 visitors to the town’s Quarry yesterday, was called off due to heavy downpours.

Margaret Griffiths, secretary, said group members made a site visit at 8am yesterday but were forced to pull the plug on the event because the conditions were “horrendous”.

An array of events had been organised for the day including horse riding displays, keep fit classes and classic car parades, in a bid to raise cash for Hope House Children’s Hospice.

It is hoped the event will take place later in summer.

Ms Griffiths said: “It’s a real disappointment. We had a committee meeting at the site first thing in the morning and we had no choice but to call it off. The weather was horrendous.

“This is the first time it has been called off in our entire history. The event has been postponed and we are due to hold a meeting in the coming weeks to discuss holding it on another date.

“The mayor was due to come down and we tried to phone as many people as we could to tell them it was off.

“We didn’t have contact details for all the people due to attend, but hope they will come back when we reschedule.”
