Town councillors in Shrewsbury will be asked to approve up to £5,000 tonight to fight plans to build an incinerator.

The authority has set a budget of £3,000, which could be extended to £5,000 to prepare material and seek specialist representation for a public inquiry into Veolia’s plans to create the burner at Battlefield.

Members of the council’s finance committee will meet at 6pm at the Guildhall to discuss the matter and agree procedures ahead of Veolia’s appeal hearing in September.

A report to the meeting says: “Shrewsbury Town Council, its members and officers do not claim to be experts, scientists or indeed health professionals, mere lay persons who have a common goal to represent the people they serve.

Therefore the town council would wish to seek the appointment of a specialist to guide them in the process of making a realistic representation at the appeal.

The town council has set a budget of £3,000, which depending on the quality of the proposals could be extended to £5,000 to prepare a proof of evidence and prepare for the delivery of that proof to the public inquiry.

“The proof of evidence is required to be submitted to the Planning Inspectorate on Tuesday, August 30, 2011, with that evidence likely to be presented to the inquiry on Friday, September 30, 2011.”

Veolia is appealing against a decision by Shropshire Council’s strategic planning committee to refuse permission for the incinerator.

i dont fancy their chances – shropshire council has approved about half a million for veolia to launch its fight, backed by a Queens Council and loads of consultant expert speekers

meanwhile friends of the earth and the town council are chucking in a couple of grand each to hire some graduate lawyer

more public money, as the public planning department funded by the council combined with some town council lawyer funded by the council squares off against veolias legal team, funded by the council, to build an unwanted incinertor, funded by the council on land owned and funded by the council to have waste which is funded by the council delivered to it every day at the expense of yeah thats right the council and then if it all goes wrong no problem they will be bailed out by the council and the council can pay to take their waste to veolias incinerator in birmingham instead which was funded by anotehr council with yes haulage of course all covered by the council

is there a common theme here,

the council taxpayer is being SHAFTED!

I am pleased they are opposing it atleast they represent the people of Shrewsbury most of whom are against the incinerator

Clearly our Shropshire County Councillors were AWOL when health, environmental and financial grounds were being discussed for this development

Well I might just go AWOL and forget to vote for them come the election.

i am pleased atleast some one is standing up for our health and safety

they think that they can just dump waste on us because its a poorer neighbourhood they would never dream of putting this in Copthorne or Belle Vue

What you mean give us another?

W’eve already had the people incinerator spewing out chemicals for more than three decades over this way.
Haven’t you noticed that the folk this side of town look a bit like we come form Telford, Wolverhampton, Birmingham or even Nottingham where apparently it is perfectly acceptable to pollute the atmosphere.
