1,500 car parking spaces allocated for Elton John gig
Monday 6th June 2011, 7:00PM BST.
More than 1,500 car parking spaces have now been allocated for Sir Elton John’s concert in Shrewsbury this Sunday. About 16,000 people are expected to attend the gig at the Greenhous Meadow.
This will make it the largest music concert ever held in Shropshire.
Concert-goers travelling to the show by car have until 5pm tomorrow to secure one of the remaining allocated parking spaces, with passes costing £8.
Ticketholders have been advised to allow extra time for their journey on Sunday.
A section of Oteley Road will be closed off to general and through traffic for the duration of the event.
Parking restrictions will be in place for Meole Estate, Meole Village, Sutton Park, Reabrook, Belle Vue South and Sutton Farm.
Shropshire Council has issued residents in those areas with parking passes.
Concert-goers will not be allowed to park in these areas. Drivers will also be banned from using the roads for dropping off and picking up people attending the event.
Those driving to the concert have been told the rear access gate to the stadium behind Sainsbury’s superstore will be closed.
The gig is due to start at about 6pm when support act Ed Drewett will take to the stage. Elton John will then arrive on stage at about 7pm.
Car parking passes can be purchased by calling (01743) 289177 or at www.shrewsburytown.com
The parking spaces are all located within around 10 minutes’ walk from the stadium.

The article above states that the support is due on stage at 6pm. However, the promoter’s literature states that attendees should be in their seats for 6:50 ready for the show to start at 7:20.
The tickets show the performance starts at 7:00.
Does anybody know what is really going on?

I have a ticket for EJ on sunday, but can’t find any info on parking for the concert. Darren’s suggestion is the only reasonable option at present, but suspect that will be scuppered on the day. Train likely to be congested because Cosford Air Show also on. Seem to have missed the boat with the 1,500 tickets availaable on the day. Seeing the posts on the subject I feel most unwelcome.

I’ve just bought a car parking ticket on the Shrewsbury Town website. I found out yesterday was the last day to buy a car parking space but my order has gone through, £9 per car. You should also be able to book onto Park & Ride at the Oxon site but I couldn’t get the link to work for that. The link below will tell you about arrangements and there’s a further link at the end which will take you to the bookings page. Only requires a simple log in, very quick.
Hope this helps.

The Shrewsbury Town website states:
All ticket purchasers have been contacted through the event promoter explaining the requirements for pre booking parking options. Despite this there may still be some attendees who have not been able to make arrangements over the last few weeks
I was never contacted, and didn’t realise there were all these special implements being put in place for parking. Hopefully it won’t be so intimidating when we actually drive up to Shrewsbury tomorrow – we’ll be arriving midday so hoping there will be plenty of car parking spaces for the day!
