Firm handed £20,000 fine over asbestos
Saturday 4th June 2011, 11:29AM BST.
A company has been ordered to pay £20,000 after its director and two self-employed workers were exposed to dangerous asbestos fibres during work on a factory in Oswestry.
John Todd Ltd, of Middletown, was fined £10,000 and ordered to pay a further £10,000 courts costs following the incident at the Mile Oak Industrial Estate.
The refurbishment firm admitted breaching Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 during a hearing at Shrewsbury Magistrates Court yesterday.
The court heard the firm had been commissioned to refurbish a building on the industrial estate but when licensed asbestos removal contractors arrived on October 18, they found two self-employed workers and company director John Todd had already started to remove the material.
The company had taken no precautions to prevent the spread of fibres, the court heard.
