Ceremonial gowns bid sparks criticism
Saturday 4th June 2011, 11:29AM BST.
Councillors in Tenbury Wells are considering spending hundreds of pounds on ceremonial gowns to wear at official functions, it was revealed today.
Medals could also be bought for former mayors of the town to wear, while the gowns could be made available for all councillors representing the town at formal dinners and events in other parishes.
But the plans have come under attack from former mayor Keith Griffiths, who does not feel any spending on gowns is justified or needed.
Members of Tenbury Town Council will discuss the issue at a meeting on Monday night.
Mr Griffiths said: “You can make an impression by the way you conduct yourself, there is no need for all these posh gowns. As a ratepayer I don’t think it is something I would like to contribute to.”
