Telford boy’s miracle recovery after car accident
Friday 3rd June 2011, 6:30PM BST.
A THREE-YEAR-OLD Telford boy who survived despite suffering horrific injuries in a road accident outside his home has been hailed a miracle by doctors.
The parents of little Jamie Hancox were told to prepare for the worst after the toddler was knocked off his scooter when it collided with a van in Brookside. Jamie was airlifted to hospital for emergency treatment on May 24.
But today Jamie’s parents, Mark and Shelley, said their son was going to survive and praised the efforts of the emergency services and staff at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
Mr Hancox, who lives with his family in Bourneside Drive, said Jamie was now beginning to recognise his family and was making signs of a good recovery.
“We were faced with the possibility that it was over for Jamie and he proved them all wrong,” he said.
“He should not have survived and doctors have called him the miracle save.
“He is now out of intensive care and breathing on his own. Every day is another positive step.
“The doctors and the air ambulance were amazing, they saved my son’s life.”
Mr Hancox added his son, who attends Windmill Primary School in Brookside, was defying the odds.
“The past few days have been amazing because he has started to say the odd word,” he added.
“The hospital staff have been absolutely fantastic with us and I can’t thank them enough.”
Mr Hancox said his family also benefited from the Ronald McDonald House charity, which gives families of ill children a home to use near the hospital.
On the day of the accident Mr Hancox was on business in Scotland and could not fly back to Birmingham because of the ash cloud.
Staff at the Premier Inn in Greenock, Glasgow, helped the father-of-four get home to see his son.
He said: “I was in a state of shock and could not get home. But the hotel staff drove me to the train station. When I got there I just could not remember my pin number to pay and they put £20 on the counter for my fare. The staff there were incredible.”
