Son’s anguish as father dies one month after attack
Friday 3rd June 2011, 3:27PM BST.
The son of an Oswestry pensioner, who died a month after being attacked during a break-in at his home, today spoke of his grief at his father’s death.
Charles Green, 87, of Ambleside Road, died early yesterday in the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital after being seriously injured in the early hours of May 2. The pensioner’s family today spoke of their sadness at his death.
His son Terry Green said: “All the members of the family are so sad to lose our father, grandfather and great-grandfather.”
And grandson Lee Davies said: “He was a very loving man to all his family.”
Police said Mr Green had been left with bleeding on the brain, a double fracture of his left hip socket, a severely swollen and split ear and serious bruising to the back of his neck and his arms after the attack.
He was initially treated at the North Staffordshire Hospital in Stoke-on-Trent but was transferred to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.
The family had said the pensioner had received superb treatment from paramedics and hospital staff.
Police have renewed their appeal for information over the pensioner’s death.
Detective Inspector Mick Homden said yesterday: “Our investigation into the incident has been ongoing and further inquiries will now be carried out.
“The incident happened at about 2.45am on May 2 when Mr Green awoke to find two men in his house.”
He urged people in the Ambleside Road area to cast their minds back to the Bank Holiday Monday and to call Oswestry CID if they saw anything suspicious on 0300 3333000.
He said a post mortem examination had taken place to determine the cause of death but the results were not yet available.
Two men were arrested on the same day of the attack.
A man, 25, has been charged with entering Mr Green’s home as a trespasser and subjecting him to violence. He appeared before Shrewsbury Crown Court on Tuesday and was remanded in custody until next month.
A 23-year-old man is currently on police bail pending further inquiries.
