Poultry farm plans ‘unsuitable’ for Shropshire countryside
Wednesday 1st June 2011, 3:16PM BST.
Plans to build five poultry units housing up to a quarter of a million chickens are unsuitable for Shropshire’s “green and pleasant land”, an inquiry heard.
The Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) said the plans for the huge units at Little Ness, between Shrewsbury and Oswestry, would be more suited to an industrial area.
Farmer Guy Davies wants to put up the buildings on land he owns and is appealing against a decision by Shropshire Council to turn down planning permission.
But the CPRE said it was opposing the plans at a hearing chaired by a government planning inspector at Shirehall yesterday .
Spokesman Roger Carlisle said: “England is quite rightly described as a green and pleasant land, and this is nowhere more prominent than in the county of Shropshire.”
He added: “The character of Shropshire should be protected. What is being proposed is exceptionally large poultry units not in keeping with the rural landscape.”
The proposal is for five poultry units and highway improvements.
Peter Fenwick, acting on behalf of Mr Davies, argued the application should be supported as the type of sustainable.
“We are not trying to suggest the buildings are small, but they are for agricultural activities,” he added.
