Letter: Ryan Giggs and respecting people’s privacy
Tuesday 31st May 2011, 6:00AM BST.
Letter: Since the subject of gossip has been highlighted in the news lately, thanks to Mr Giggs and his failed super injunction, I thought I would provide the truth about gossip.
I’m sure many find gossiping a form of entertainment and just a bit of harmless fun, right?
Well, no, wrong; gossip is very damaging to those on the receiving end.
It causes high levels of stress and anxiety above what is healthy. Also in lots of cases the stress is that prolonged it can and does cause mental injury and scars that no one can see.
The poor man or woman may never be the same again.
We are taught at school that sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me.
Well that is wrong. Gossiping is just a form of bullying – and a really vile one at that.
Should we not have the right to protection against it as a human right?

There’s an easy way to avoid gossip. If you’re married, don’t sleep around – and particularly not with reality TV glamour model gold diggers.

Interesting that a short while back when I wrote the Shropshire Star a letter with details of an imminent T&W organised public consultation meeting on regeneration (that I felt was purposely being under-publicised) I was told by Shropshire Star staff that despite the public interest angle it would have to wait in line with a queue of letters for over a month to be published, even if that meant that the all important date was missed.
Therefore it is Interesting that with Mr Giggs identity only having been revealed in the last week that this letter was felt to be important enough to have its publishing expedited?
Of course I realise that this letter is all about the much, much more important discussion of the freedom of the press – also apparently much, much more important than informing your readership about a local meeting which was very much in the public interest!
For the record it appears that I may well have gauged the public opinion a little better than the Shropshire Star staff as all three of the councillors involved in that regeneration work were subsequently kicked off T&W Council!

I suppose I should also add that the letter never did get published!

Ahhhhh, poor Mr Giggs, he must feel awful, bullied by everyone and their sick gossip. It’s going to make his next affair really difficult to hide.
