Cabbies hit out over Telford rise delay
Tuesday 31st May 2011, 2:44PM BST.
Taxi drivers in Telford are losing at least £50 a week in wages after council bosses failed to implement an agreed rise in fares, it was today claimed.
Black cab drivers today said despite Telford & Wrekin Council approving the rise in March, nothing had been done and they were now losing money. The decision was made by licensing chiefs after pressure from drivers facing increases in fuel bills and living costs.
The proposed increase put forward by Telford Hackney Carriage Association, which is believed to be the first since 2005, would see an average two-mile journey cost about £2 more.
Under legal guidelines, the council must publish a notice warning people of the increases and give them 28 days to e object.
But today a spokesman for the association, who did not wish to be named, said the council had not published any notice in the newspaper or made any move to implement the decision.
He said: “It was backed by the council in March and there has been no arrangement about it. There should have been a notice put in and I check the paper every night and I have not seen it.
“They told us it would be done as soon as possible and the increase should be in by now. We are losing at least £50 a week.”
Council spokesman Russell Griffin said: “The legal notice is already prepared and ready to go in the press but we first need an implementation date to be agreed by the new council for when the proposed tariffs will take effect as this has to form part of the legal notice.”
He added: “If there are no objections from the public to the proposed new tariffs and surcharges, they will take affect on a date notified in the legal notice.
“Once all this has been put in place, all Hackney carriage owners will be written to informing them of the proposed arrangements for testing and sealing the meters.
“However, if the council receives objections, these must be considered before any proposed increase comes into effect.”

£50 that’s about eight packets of ciggies or quite a few fish and chip meals, TWDC looking after the health of our cab drivers!

Another story of Telford taxis having a go at the Council. The real threat to Telford Taxis, is all these Shropshire taxis that have appeared, taking the business in Telford. If the ‘spokesman’ would speak out about that, perhaps the Telford cabs would not need the public to pick up the tab by an additional 40p per mile.

How can they be ‘losing’ £50 a week if they never had it in the 1st place ???

Oh dear what a shame join the rest of use who do not get an annual rise. Wake up to reality it least you have a job and an income

What sort of spokesman for an association does not wish to be named?
Let’s face it, most cabbies make it up as they go along. I paid 17 quid for a taxi from Ironbridge to Wellington last month, that’s nearly £3 a mile!

Ian, some charge too much but most don’t charge enough, council employed volunteer drivers earn more than most drivers without having to subject themselves or their vehicles to the same twice a year MoT checks, insurances or hmrc rules. Jeffery it’s their 1st rise since 2005, so it’s definately not annual!

Council-employed volunteer drivers earn more than most drivers?
Volunteers “earning”? Surely they’re not volunteers then.
What do these volunteers do? Which council department do they actually work for? Can anyone volunteer to do the job and get paid more than taxi drivers?

As Basil Fawlty would put it, “I mean if they don’t like cars why don’t they get themselves another bloody job designing cathedrals or composing violin concertos?”
Any body else had a rise in the last three years? Thought not.

Nowadays I need to be really desperate before I will hire a taxi. It’s not only the issue of cost; it’s also one of hygiene and driving skill. My more recent experience, say over the last ten years up to (sadly) recently, has been that both (hygiene and driving skills) have become more and more lacking.
Yes I do not doubt there are good, careful & experienced cabbies out there, heck, I once met a friendly one, honest! However it is my experience that cabbies have no pride in their trade, treat customers almost with disdain, and believe ‘service’ if able to define it will do so as a brand of white good products.
They now want the passenger to pay more. Provide a decent service and who knows, but until then……………. You’re having a laugh!
