Funeral of former Shrewsbury mayor Eileen Sandford
Tuesday 24th May 2011, 11:20AM BST.
The life of former Shrewsbury mayor Eileen Sandford was celebrated by friends and family at her funeral.
More than 150 people crammed into Christ Church in Annscroft, near Shrewsbury, yesterday to remember Mrs Sandford, who died on May 5 at the age of 88.
The Reverend Michael Whittock told the assembled congregation: “We are here to give thanks for a very, very remarkable lady.”
Mrs Sandford, who was made an MBE by the Queen in 2004, represented the Harlescott ward as a Shrewsbury and Atcham borough councillor and a Shropshire County Council member.
She became the mayor of Shrewsbury in 2003 and carried out a number of stunts for charity, including abseiling down Lord Hill’s Column.
Rev Whittock recalled how she carried out the role of mayor to perfection.
A heartfelt tribute to Mrs Sandford was given by Councillor Peter Nutting, who explained they had become firm friends during their time in local politics.
The funeral was also attended by several current Shropshire councillors, along with Mrs Sandford’s neighbours, friends and fellow church members.
A collection was taken for the Midlands Air Ambulance at the service, with the final total to be announced.
