250 people banned from Shrewsbury’s pubs

About 250 people are currently banned from pubs in Shrewsbury due to bad behaviour including violence, theft and drug use, new figures showed today.

And a further 60 people have signed contracts promising good behaviour if they visit pubs in the town, accepting they will be banned if they misbehave.

The figures were today released by the Safer Shrewsbury Pubwatch Partnership and West Mercia Police, which also said a further 300 young people had been given warning letters in the last two years after trying to get into a pub with fake ID.

In one of the most recent cases a young girl was given a police reprimand after she tried to get into a pub after changing her date of birth on her passport and on the same night trying the same thing with her driver’s licence, both of which were confiscated.

Richard Goodchild, pubwatch manager, said anybody causing trouble in pubs or anyone underage trying to get served alcohol would be dealt with.

He said: “It is zero-tolerance to anybody caught misusing other people’s ID. They will be banned from licensed premises, never mind what other police consequences they could face. And the same goes to anybody causing trouble within the Shrewsbury area.”

Constable David Walton, the Local Police Officer for Shrewsbury town centre, said he expected the numbers of pub bans and acceptable behaviour contracts to remain the same.

But he added: “Really serious assaults are on the decrease, which is encouraging. There’s been a 25 per cent reduction in in violent crime in the town centre and I’ve no doubt that the robust banning procedure has led to that.”

I’m not really surprised. I’ve had nights out in many other towns and cities such as Birmingham, Nottingham, Cardiff, Manchester, and even London, and have never seen the level of antisocial behaviour by percentage of population as I have in Shrewsbury.

It is worth noting that the bad behaviour is not evenly spread. Mardol seems to be a particular hotspot, as does Barker Street.

Unfortunately many of the people who do behave decently have now been put off visiting the pubs within the loop of the river after dark. A great shame, least of all because of the difficulties the hospitality industry is currently experiencing.

Good its a pity more areas do not do this, it may make pubs safer for people to enjoy.

Nothing like over kill is there…
No wonder the pubs are struggling for trade with the Punwatch apes trying to ruin things. It causes more trouble banning them why don’t they just kick them out and have a polite word and a click round the ear?

I think that if a member of staff clipped someone around the ear the chances are that in this day and age they would be charged with assault! Those days are long gone – nobody dares touch anyone!

Will the people of Shrewsbury now admit their town is not a pleasant place to be. I would rather a night out in Telford, everyone’s much friendlier.

    Andrew from Telford.

Shrewsbury residents are so snobby, yet this is how they behave on a night out. Rubbish night clubs, rubbish shopping centre, expensive parking, why would anyone want to live there.

Hang on a minute….live in Shrewsbury????
Are you forgeting something here? Telford is awful and much worse than Shrewsbury by far, how can you say a town full of chav street thugs and benfit scroungers is a better place to live than Shrewsbury….
Don’t get me wrong Shrewsbury is now not a great place to live because of the pompous nimbies that try to run it, but come on really Telford, Nice…. Jog On mate.

        Darren,

Have you ever been to Telford (other than the Town Centre)?

I’ve lived here for almost 25 years – and never been the victim of a crime. I have a decent-sized house, purchased at an affordable price and a very pleasant living environment. I have no ‘chavs’ living nearby, only well-educated, courteous and friendly neighbours.

The town has provided me with reasonably well-paid and secure employent for much of my working life – in both public and private sectors over the years. What’s not to like? As with any other town, it has some run-down areas – but I’m fortunate enough not to need to visit these most of the time.

Whilst some of Shrewsbury has a certain ‘olde-worlde’ charm, I find the traffic in the town centre a pain, and many areas of the town have a distinctly shabby look to them – I certainly wouldn’t fancy living there.

Yet another Shrewsbury v Telford debate. But it’s always the Telford residents who make such comments. Shrewsbury folk are far too dignified to get involved. Shrewsbury – don’t rise to it.

From C Deal 4 onwards, what are you thinking? Take a real here & now issue & drag it down to a slanging match. You should all be ashamed. You show nothing but ignorance towards the real issue, what actually goes on in your neighbours towns and above all, each other!

Should SS decide “Which is better & Why, Telford or Shrewsbury?” as a suitable topic for a blog then great, go for it. But in the meantime please stop hijacking real issues & even try to get on with each other.

No, I’m not an ex-hippie preaching LOVE. I’m just fed up with your fruitless bickering. (I’m from Telford incidently!)

Its not the pubs in Shrewsbury that do not feel safe, its the streets, more needs to be done than simply stopping trouble makers walking into premises, it only protects the people inside, not the people walking the streets etc.

Does anyone know how such a ban is enforced? Sure, some will be troublemakers who are well known locally, but how does anyone recall 250 individual faces, most of which they’ve only ever seen in a photograph?
