Stabbing victim in ‘stable’ condition

A Shropshire woman stabbed in the middle of a town in front of startled shoppers was in a stable condition in hospital today.

Ann Parton, from Church Stretton, is being treated at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital for serious neck, face and shoulder injuries suffered after she was attacked by a man in Sandford Avenue in the town on Thursday afternoon.

The man, who is believed to have then turned the knife on himself, is being treated for neck injuries at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. He is also in a stable condition.

Police said yesterday that one man had been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

Witnesses to the incident, which happened at about 2.45pm, said they saw a man attack Mrs Parton from behind. He then fled from chasing police. He  is believed to have stabbed himself in the neck and collapsed.

An off-duty nurse went to  Mrs Parton’s aid, using dressings from a nearby chemist to stem the blood.

Police cordoned off most of the town centre, while two ambulances and an air ambulance arrived.

Detective Chief Inspector Alan Edwards  said: “As part of our investigations it is important anyone who witnessed what happened contacts Ludlow or Shrewsbury police station on 0300 333 3000.”
