This week’s pictures from the past – May 20

Lots of happy Shropshire faces here, and why not, as these pupils from Pontesbury CofE School were on holiday at Staithes in 1948. The picture was taken at nearby Whitby and although it was over 60 years ago Glyn Price, of Snailbeach, has come up with all the names. They are: Back row  Richard Pearce, Miss Doule, Reg Evans, Noel Hamer, Margaret B. Davies, Alec Poole, Jean Powell, Robert Madeley, Mervyn Bonner, Terry Jones, Jack Moore. These Shropshire County Police officers had been in the Armed Forces and, with their release at war's end, were on a fortnight's rehabilitation course at the police district training school at Ryton-on-Dunsmore, Coventry. The photo dates from August or September 1945 and was loaned by retired Police Superintendent Bob Landers, of Shrewsbury  he's in the middle of the middle row. He had been a bomb aimer in a Lancaster. Among the rest of the group are a number who had served in the Guards. "The Police Sergeant in the centre of the front row was a Staffordshire officer who was resident drill sergeant at the school," Mr Landers recalled. "Regrettably the great majority of this group are no longer alive." He added that he had retired from West Mercia Police at Wellington in 1973.
