Meeting tonight in Shrewsbury new homes battle

Residents are to meet again tonight to discuss proposals to build 300 homes in Shrewsbury.

Persimmon Homes is hoping to build homes on open fields next to Shillingston Drive, in Battlefields.

A residents’ group is set to meet at 7pm tonight at the Red Lion pub in Battlefield Road. Almost 90 people attended a similar meeting last week, expressing their opposition to the proposals.

Berwick Grange and Battlefield Road residents group spokesman Jane Strouts said she expected tonight’s meeting to attract even more people.

She said building adjacent to the Lions Coppice woodlands could have a negative effect on the ecology of the site and questions had also been raised about whether the junction next to Tesco would be able to cope with the additional traffic.

A Persimmon Homes spokesman said: “The site is considered greenfield having the potential to deliver housing, which is also recognised by the council in the Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment.

“In preparation of the planning submission we have undertaken a full ecology survey of the site.

“This survey shows that whilst the site is greenfield it offers little in terms of ecological quality.”

He added a transport assessment was currently being undertaken, including junctions in the area.
