A multi-million pound Waitrose supermarket could be built in Shrewsbury under plans to snap up land at a garden centre.

The chain, which opened its first convenience store in the town last week, said it was in advanced talks with Percy Thrower’s Garden and Leisure store in Oteley Road, Meole Brace.

Under the plans Waitrose would buy the garden centre to make way for a supermarket while bosses at Percy Thrower’s would receive cash to build a garden centre at an adjoining site.

A spokesman for Waitrose, which is owned by the John Lewis Partnership, confirmed yesterday that they were hoping to open another venture in the town.

He said: “Garden & Leisure Ltd and Waitrose are in discussions to redevelop the existing garden centre in Oteley Road, which would bring new investment and a significant number of new jobs to the town.

“The proposal will include a new state-of- the-art Percy Thrower’s garden centre and a new neighbourhood centre anchored by a Waitrose food store designed to complement our new convenience store which opened last week in Pride Hill. We are continuing to develop plans so we can bring them forward and give the local community the opportunity to provide their feedback.”

Carol Paris, operations director of Garden & Leisure, which owns the Percy Thrower’s garden centre, today said it was “exciting” news but said final arrangements still needed to be drawn up.

She said: “We have been in discussions with Waitrose regarding a proposed new state-of-the-art garden centre for some time and they want to develop a supermarket as well.

“Nothing at this stage has been finalised and nothing is signed yet but we are in discussions with them and have been for a while.

“It will still be subject to planning and finalising an agreement. We would remain on the same site although not exactly the same footprint. We are very excited about it and would be delighted to be in partnership with Waitrose.”

they will (I hope and assume) retain the ledgendary percy throwers name, which surely is good for pr and business…

it will just have a brand new awesome waitrose on the back – brilliant

and you will be able to park there for free

(good for the footy fans too then…)

A ‘ state of the art garden centre’ eh! Got to admire a company press office putting spin on a garden centre to make it sound exciting! How many more green fields will this ‘ redevelopment’ cost us?!?

This is excellent! Shrewsbury should have had a big Waitrose years ago, when I moved here I was suprised that there wasn’t already one here as I think it will do really well.

Given that Waitrose aims to compete at the high quality, higher priced and more ‘desirable’ end of the food market this might not be good news for the large number of quality and ‘local produce’ food shops which have sprung up in the area

It’s bad news for any farm shop or small retailer. As far as ethical, waitroses ethics are questionable once you scratch the surface but I’m sure the Wannabe snooty soccer moms and chinless wonder Tuscany tarquins won’t mind just so long as they can park for free and have more cash for gluten free-halal-Bhutan via Chelsea-rice paper wrapped-individual polo mints.

It’ll be interesting to see if this goes ahead in its proposed form. The collapse of Focus DIY potentially offers Waitrose a significantly cheaper entry into Shrewsbury.

I’ve been hoping for a Waitrose in Shrewsbury for a long time, ever since I fisrt used one when visiting my son in Hampshire. SO much nicer than Tesco or Sainsbury’s – it’s a pity it will use some green fields by relocating Percy Throwers but thankfully it will bring some much needed competition to Sainsbury’s who have had the monopoly on that side of town for too long now. And I trust they will have a better surfaced car park !!!!

My hamster disappeared sometime between 17:59 and 18:01 on 21/05.
I am beginning to think he’s been raptured.
He was a good boy, so it’s not exactly surprising that he was the only one chosen by our Lord.

Although he did chew his water bottle.

He has returned. Had a kip but now….
          He is risen.
And between eating sunflower seeds and scampering on his wheel, he tells me he has a message concerning the Rapture.

It is of great importance to all believers.

Thus speaketh Bitey; “Do not chew your water-bottle lest you anger the Lord”
