The sister of a Shropshire pensioner who was killed in a blaze at her village home today paid tribute to her as a “simply wonderful woman”.

Norma Foster was pulled from her home in Rindleford, near Bridgnorth, on Monday evening after a fire broke out on the ground floor.

Emergency services were called at 6pm after a friend became concerned she was not answering her phone.

Paramedics and firemen attempted to resuscitate the 90-year-old, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sister, Jill Wright, 81, said her sister was a fun, loving individual who lived life to the full, adding she would be sorely missed.

She said: “The police came to my house at 3.30am to tell me what had happened. It’s been a blur since then, I’m absolutely devastated.

“I know she was 90 but it never seemed like it, she was so full of life and energy and wonderful fun.

“She was not only my sister, she was also my friend. Norma had a wonderful life, she lived it to the full.”

Mrs Wright, of Sutton Coldfield, said: “In her 20s Norma helped dispose of unexploded bombs in World War II, she then went on to work at Beatties in Wolverhampton.

“It was at Beatties she met Ernest, he was the financial director, they married and moved to the Rindleford in the 1960s.

“She will be missed by everyone who new her. Norma was lots of fun, a simply wonderful woman.”

Margaret Simpson, 73, from Bridgnorth, said Mrs Foster was fun, lively and a joy to be around.

“Norma was a lot of fun, a very feisty character who loved her champagne.

“She was very good company, I will miss it greatly.”

Fire chiefs say the blaze is being treated as unexplained but not suspicious.
