Poor ticket sales sank Shrewsbury Quarry 80s show
Wednesday 18th May 2011, 7:45PM BST.
An 80s concert due to be held in Shrewsbury’s Quarry in the summer has been cancelled because of poor ticket sales, organisers announced today.
Marc Almond from Soft Cell, Kim Wilde, and Kid Creole had been due to perform at the Quarry on July 16. But officials today pulled the plug on the gig because they had sold too few tickets.
A spokesman for the gig said: “The decision has been taken for commercial reasons. The sales of tickets has been very slow.”
The concert was first held five years ago but organisers IML Concerts have decided that this year’s event will not go ahead.
A statement said: “IML Concerts regret the cancellation of the show as it has enjoyed a series of excellent evenings since our very first show in 2006.”
The company said it was “naturally disappointed that we have had to cancel a show for the first time”.
“We apologise for any inconvenience caused to ticket-holders who will receive a full refund from the point of purchase. We have asked each box office to contact ticket-holders which they are conducting over the next 24 hours.”
A statement on IML’s website said they had been forced to cancel the show due to “circumstances beyond our control”.
The spokesman added that a concert in the Quarry by Status Quo on July 15, in contrast, was proving extremely popular.
He said: “Tickets are selling very well for the Quo concert, but the 80s event proved less popular.”
