Jobs blow at Shropshire firms

Shropshire was hit by a double jobs blow today as national figures revealed unemployment fell by 36,000 in the three months to March to 2.4 million.

Dairy Crest is moving production of its Clover spread out of the county, reducing the workforce at its Crudgington factory by 90.

Engineering firm Jones of Oswestry has sent more than 50 staff home for five days following the loss of a big contract, to give bosses a chance to discuss the company’s long-term future.

It comes as the future of Shropshire’s two Mothercare stores, in Telford and Shrewsbury, was in doubt after the firm announced plans to close 110 sites.

Dairy Crest spokesman Richard Jones said there would be opportunities for some staff to relocate to Kirby in Liverpool.

At Jones of Oswestry, the directors issued a statement, saying: “There are 56 people employed by the company. Employees have been advised they will be contacted within five working days as to future developments.”

But there was still some brighter employment news for the county today, as latest figures showed the county’s jobless total continued to fall.

There were 9,007 people out of work in Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin last month — 141 lower than March and 559 down on the same time in 2010.

I must get my eyes checked. For a split second I thought the headline read as something very different!
