Former Shrewsbury Tesco site sold to developers
Wednesday 18th May 2011, 7:38PM BST.
Shrewsbury’s former Tesco site, which has been lying empty for four years, has been snapped up in a multi-million pound deal, it was announced today.
Councillor Malcolm Price, Shropshire Council cabinet member for housing, said the 6.56-acre site in Arlington Way had been bought by developer Taylor Wimpey.
No details on the sale figure has yet been announced but the site was put on the market in November last year for offers of more than £4 million.
Councillor Price said Taylor Wimpey was expected to submit a planning application for the land shortly.
He said: “From our point of view the regeneration of that site is long overdue and I am sure local residents would like it to be developed rather than standing idle.
“Any planning application will have to go through the normal planning process and we look forward to seeing the plans by Taylor Wimpey as soon as possible.
“They are looking at about 100 properties in total, around 20 of which will be affordable units.”
The site has been empty since Tesco left the area in spring 2007 to move to a £15 million Tesco Extra store in Harlescott. The council took ownership of the land following a land swop deal between the former Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council and Tesco in 2007.
Taylor Wimpey said it was unable to comment.
