Youths throw stones at driver’s windscreen in Shifnal

A terrified driver escaped uninjured after her windscreen was smashed by a stone thrown by a gang of youths in Shifnal.

Police said a group of about 10 young people, including a woman, were seen throwing stones at cars in Park Street at just before 5.30pm yesterday.

One struck the windscreen of a black Vauxhall Astra as it was driving past.

The group are thought to be aged in their late teens and early 20s.

West Mercia Police spokesman Richard Ewels said: “Fortunately the driver was not injured but this reckless behaviour could have resulted in a collision.

“It’s not known whether the stone was deliberately thrown at the vehicle but on realising it had struck the car, the individual concerned stuck his thumbs up as if to celebrate.”

Shifnal Town Council vice-chairwoman Eileen Briscoe said: “I haven’t heard anything about this incident or anything like this happening in the past.

“It’s a stupid thing to do in the first place and could cause a driver to lose control of their vehicle. Park Street is a busy road and there’s a school up there as well.”

Police are seeking witnesses to the incident and information about the identities of the group.

Anyone with any information is asked to ring Shifnal police station on 0300 333 3000.
