Plan to lock off Clee Hill routes to stop fly-tipping
Monday 16th May 2011, 7:33PM BST.
Landowners have said they may lock up access routes to beauty spots across Clee Hill at night in a drastic bid to combat escalating fly-tipping in the area.
The move is being considered by the newly-formed Clee Hill Litter Action Group.
It comes two months after armchairs were dumped at the top of Titterstone Clee.
Tyres and trade waste have also been dumped in the area in recent months.
George Cummings, chairman of the action group, said he had spoken to some of the private landowners in the area and said they were prepared to put up barriers blocking access to their land.
But fears have been raised such a plan could deter locals and genuine visitors.
Other ideas include sending volunteers out on patrol at weekends to ensure families and day-trippers do not leave litter from picnics.
The plans were discussed at the action group’s first meeting last week.
Mr Cummings said: “The landowners are very much on-board with what we are trying to do to tackle fly-tipping. Some have said they are prepared to put barriers up to stop people accessing their land and maybe making keys available to locals in a bid to stop people dumping rubbish.
“It would be a pretty drastic measure to lock areas off at night as it is a vast area.
“It is some way down the line but it is one of a number of measures we are considering.”
He said it was also hoped more could be done to tackle litter across areas such as Dhustone, Titterstone Clee and Catherton Common. A community litter pick on Titterstone Clee Hill in October last year saw 75 bags of rubbish and 18 tyres collected.
