The funeral of former mayor of Shrewsbury Eileen Sandford, who died at the age of 88, will take place on May 23.

Mrs Sandford, who was made an MBE by the Queen in 2004, died on May 5 after being diagnosed with bowel and liver cancer.

Her funeral service will be held at Christ Church, Annscroft, at 1.30pm and will be followed by private cremation.

The family have requested that the funeral will be a celebration of her life and black clothing is optional.

They said donations would be appreciated which would go to The Midland Air Ambulance Service.

Shropshire Council confirmed the county flag at the Shirehall would fly at half-mast on the day.

Mrs Sandford became Mayor of Shrewsbury and Atcham in 2003.

She is fondly remembered for taking part in a number of energetic stunts for charity during her year in office, including abseiling down the 120ft Lord Hill’s Column in Shrewsbury and a water-skiing event at the age of 80.

Mrs Sandford represented the Harlescott ward for many years as both a Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Councillor and Shropshire County Council member.

Tributes from friends and former colleagues have poured in since the announcement of her death.

Councillor Peter Nutting, a former colleague of Mrs Sandford, said she would be sadly missed and was a wonderful servant to Shrewsbury and Harlescott area.

Last year Mrs Sandford published her autobiography, Come on Eileen, on her eventful life.
